What It Does & How It Helps

A diesel starter has to spin a high-compression engine fast enough to light it off, so it draws far more current and works far harder than a gasoline unit — most of these are gear-reduction starters that trade motor speed for torque through an internal gearset. They fail in two places: the solenoid contacts burn and pit until the starter clicks but will not engage, and the brushes, bushings or gear-reduction assembly wear until it drags, grinds or spins without cranking. Heat soak from the exhaust above them and years of cold-start current make both worse. A correct replacement starter restores fast, consistent cranking and full engagement of the pinion to the flywheel.
