When a CP4 lets go it does not just fail, it can send metal debris through the entire fuel system. Why the CP4.2 is a concern
The CP4.2 is a two-piston pump driven by a cam and roller-lifter arrangement. The weak spot is the follower interface: if the roller loses proper contact with the cam, the follower can rotate or gall, metal starts shedding, and that debris is pumped downstream at extreme pressure into the rails and injectors. Once metal is circulating, you are not looking at a pump swap, you are looking at a full fuel-system cleanout: pump, rails, lines, and injectors.

CP4 disaster-prevention / bypass kits. Aftermarket "disaster prevention" kits reroute the pump's internal return so that if the pump does start to fail, the metal debris is captured or diverted rather than pushed forward into the injectors and rails.
