Blown head gaskets are the nightmare every diesel owner wants to avoid, and the fastener holding the head down is at the center of the conversation. On a 6.0 Power Stroke the topic is nearly religious, but it applies to any high-boost diesel: 7.3 Power Stroke, Cummins, Duramax, all of them. The question is whether to reuse factory head bolts or step up to aftermarket head studs. Here's the honest engineering behind it and, more importantly, when the upgrade actually earns its cost.

How factory head bolts work

Most modern diesels leave the factory with torque-to-yield (TTY) head bolts. A TTY bolt is torqued to a base value and then turned a specified number of additional degrees, which stretches the bolt past its yield point into a controlled plastic zone. Stretching it that way gives consistent clamping load across all the fasteners, and it works fine for a stock engine at stock cylinder pressures.

The catch is right there in the name. Because a TTY bolt is stretched past yield, it's a one-time-use fastener. You cannot properly reuse it, and once it's set, it has limited reserve. When you add boost and cylinder pressure, whether from towing hard, tuning, or just the 6.0's inherently marginal factory clamping, the bolts can stretch a little further and let the head lift off the gasket momentarily under peak pressure. That momentary lift is what pushes combustion gases into the cooling system and lets the gasket fail.

How head studs are different

A head stud threads into the block and stays there. You torque a nut down onto the stud rather than twisting the fastener itself. That distinction matters for two reasons:

  • The stud isn't being wound and stretched during install, so it clamps more evenly and to a higher, more repeatable preload. ARP, the dominant name here, uses aerospace-grade material and a moly assembly lube to get accurate, consistent torque.
  • A quality stud is not a yield fastener. It clamps within its elastic range, holds more load, and can be reused. That extra clamping load is what keeps the head planted under high cylinder pressure so the gasket seals.

ARP offers different grades, commonly an ARP2000 material for most applications and a stronger 625-plus grade for high-horsepower builds. For the overwhelming majority of tow trucks and daily drivers, the standard grade is more than enough.

When the upgrade is actually worth it

Studs aren't free horsepower and they're not mandatory on every truck. Here's when they make sense:

  • You're already in there. The single best time to install studs is when the heads are off for other work. On a 6.0 Power Stroke, that means doing studs while you replace the oil cooler, EGR cooler, or a failed head gasket. You'll never have a cheaper labor opportunity.
  • You're adding power or a tune. More boost and cylinder pressure is exactly what overwhelms factory TTY bolts. If you're turning the truck up, studs are the responsible first step, not the last.
  • You tow at or near capacity regularly. Sustained high load is hard on clamping force. A heavy tow rig benefits from the reserve.
  • You've already lost a head gasket once. If you're doing the repair anyway, don't put factory bolts back in and hope. Do it once, do it right.

If your truck is bone stock, lightly used, and healthy, factory bolts are doing their job and you don't need to tear it apart just to swap fasteners. The upgrade pays off when the heads are already coming off or when you're changing the load the engine sees.

The install reality check

Head studs are not a bolt-on in the driveway sense. Installing them means removing the heads, which is a serious job on any diesel. On the 6.0 Power Stroke there's long-running debate about doing studs in-chassis versus pulling the cab, and much of it comes down to whether you can safely clear and torque the rear fasteners. Many shops do 6.0 studs in-frame; some prefer the cab off for access. Either way, budget for gaskets, machine-shop inspection of the head and deck surfaces, and following ARP's torque sequence and values with their supplied lube exactly. Torque the studs in the correct sequence and stages to the maker's spec, never a generic number.
