How to Install ARP Head Studs on a 6.0 Power Stroke

The 6.0 Power Stroke stretches its factory torque-to-yield head bolts under boost and cylinder pressure, the head lifts a few thousandths, and coolant and combustion start crossing at the gasket. ARP head studs fix the clamping problem the factory bolts can't hold. This is the biggest wrench job most 6.0 owners will ever tackle, and it is absolutely doable at home if you respect the process. What it is not is a job to rush or improvise torque on. Here's how it goes.

In-chassis versus cab-off

There are two ways to get the heads accessible: pull the cab, or do it in-chassis. Cab-off is the shop standard because it gives you clean access to everything, and on a body-mount truck it is often faster than fighting for room in-chassis. In-chassis is possible and saves the cab lift, but you're working around the firewall, the cowl, and the turbo pedestal in tight quarters. Decide honestly based on your tools, your space, and your patience. Either way, the head removal and stud installation are the same once you're there.

Why studs, and why one at a time

The reason ARP studs work is even, high clamping load that doesn't yield the way the factory bolts do. The reason you install them one at a time is just as important: you never want to release clamping load on the whole head at once with the gasket already in place, because the head can shift. Swap each fastener individually so the head stays located while you work.

Tools and parts you'll need

  • ARP head stud kit for the 6.0 Power Stroke (ARP2000 material, with ARP's own fastener assembly lubricant)
  • New head gaskets for your build (Ford OEM 18mm gaskets are the common choice; heavier builds sometimes go to a specific aftermarket gasket)
  • A quality torque wrench that covers ARP's specified range, plus a backup for accuracy
  • Thread chaser/tap to clean the block threads, and a way to get oil and debris out of the bolt holes
  • Straightedge and feeler gauges to check the head and deck for flatness
  • New coolant, oil and filter, and any gaskets for parts you remove to get access

Step by step

1. Tear down to the heads. Drain the coolant, then remove everything in the way, turbo, up-pipes, intake, valve covers, rockers, and pushrods, keeping every set of parts organized by cylinder so pushrods and rockers go back exactly where they came from.

2. Remove the factory head bolts and lift the heads. With the heads off, set them on a clean bench. Note orientation and keep track of the old gaskets so you can see how and where they failed.

3. Inspect and clean. Check the head and the block deck with a straightedge for warpage. If a head is questionable, it goes to a machine shop, don't stud over a warped head. Clean the deck and head surfaces to bare, clean metal, and clean the head bolt holes in the block. Oil or coolant trapped in a blind hole will give you a false torque reading or crack the block, so get the holes clean and dry.

4. Chase the threads. Run the tap or thread chaser through every block hole. Clean threads are non-negotiable for accurate, repeatable clamping load.

5. Set the new head gaskets. Position the correct head gaskets dry over the dowels. Do not use sealer unless the gasket specifically calls for it.

6. Lower the heads and install the studs one at a time. Set the head onto the dowels and gasket. Then, working one fastener at a time, thread each ARP stud in hand-tight, install the washer and nut, and move to the next. Do not torque yet.

7. Lubricate and torque per ARP's instructions. ARP supplies its own assembly lube and its own torque specification and sequence, and those figures assume you use that lube. Follow ARP's printed instructions exactly, torque in stages, in the specified crossing sequence, in multiple passes up to the final value. Do not substitute a generic head-bolt torque number, and do not oil the threads with something else. The published ARP spec is only correct with the ARP lube.

8. Reassemble. Pushrods and rockers back to their original cylinders, torque the rocker/valvetrain hardware to spec, then reinstall the intake, turbo, up-pipes, and everything you removed, replacing gaskets and O-rings as you go.

9. Fill, burp, and check. Refill coolant and burp the system fully, change the oil and filter, then start it and check for leaks. Watch temps and look for any sign of combustion in the coolant on the first drives.

Do the coolers while you're in there

You already have the turbo and intake off, which is 80 percent of the access for the oil cooler and EGR cooler. If either is original or suspect, replace them now. A fresh head gasket job on a truck with a plugged oil cooler is a job you'll be redoing, because the cooling problem that helped cook the first gaskets is still there.
