Ford ran the Bosch CP4.2 on the 6.7 Power Stroke starting with the 2011 model year. The CP4 makes higher pressure with fewer moving parts, which is great for efficiency and emissions and bad for durability.

The core problem is lubrication. The CP4 lubricates its own internals with diesel fuel. North American ultra-low-sulfur diesel has less lubricity than the European fuel the pump was originally validated on. Inside the pump, a roller rides on a camshaft lobe to drive the pistons. The 6.7 Power Stroke uses a two-stage fuel filtration setup, and both elements matter. Change them on schedule with quality filters, not the cheapest thing on the shelf. Water is an enemy of the CP4 because water has essentially zero lubricity. The fuel/water separator only protects the pump if you actually drain it and service it. Never run it low

Treat a quarter tank as empty. Low fuel means the pump runs hotter and is more likely to pull air, and air ingestion is a known trigger for roller misbehavior. This one costs you nothing and matters more than most people think.

Consider a disaster-prevention bypass

Aftermarket CP4 bypass or disaster-prevention kits reroute the pump's return fuel so that if the pump does start to fail, contaminated fuel is directed to return rather than being recirculated through the system. It does not stop the pump from failing, but it can limit how much of the fuel system gets destroyed when it does. It is a popular add for owners who tow hard or keep trucks long-term.
