What It Does & How It Helps

The transmission oil cooler sheds heat from the automatic transmission fluid, either through a heat exchanger in the radiator end tank or a separate air-to-oil cooler ahead of it. Heat is what kills an automatic: towing and heavy loads break the fluid down, and once it is degraded the clutches glaze and the converter follows. A cooler that is plugged, leaking, or holding debris after a transmission or converter failure has to be replaced or properly flushed before a rebuilt unit goes in, or the new transmission inherits the same contamination.
