What It Does & How It Helps

The fan clutch decides how hard the engine fan pulls air through the radiator, charge-air cooler and condenser. A diesel makes far more heat under load than a gas engine, and towing or grades are exactly when a tired clutch gives up: the viscous fluid leaks down or the bearing wears, the fan freewheels, and coolant and intake temperatures climb the moment road speed drops.
