What It Does & How It Helps

The harmonic balancer, or crankshaft damper, bolts to the front of the crankshaft and absorbs the torsional vibration every firing pulse puts into it. A diesel makes strong pulses, and over time the rubber or fluid element in the damper fails, the outer ring can shift or separate, and the crankshaft loses that protection. A worn balancer is replaced to protect the crank, the front seal and the belt drive.
