Exhaust smoke is one of the best free diagnostics a diesel gives you. The color tells you what's being burned, or not burned, in the cylinders, and when it happens (cold start, under load, at idle) narrows it further. A diesel tech reads smoke the way a doctor reads a symptom: white, blue, and black each mean something specific. Here's how to read the color, tie it to timing, and trace it to the actual fault instead of guessing.

The three colors and what they are

  • Black smoke is excess unburned fuel, soot. Too much fuel or not enough air.
  • White smoke is unburned fuel vapor or coolant/water vapor. Fuel that isn't igniting, or coolant getting into the combustion chamber.
  • Blue smoke is burning engine oil. Oil getting into the cylinders and going up the stack.

Get those three straight and you're already ahead of most guesswork. Now let's read each one properly.

Black smoke: too much fuel or too little air

Black smoke means the air-fuel ratio is rich, more fuel than the available air can burn cleanly. A little black smoke under hard acceleration on an older diesel is normal. Persistent or heavy black smoke is a problem, and the trick is deciding whether you have too much fuel or too little air.

Air-side causes (most common on stock trucks): - Plugged air filter starving the intake, check this first, it's free. - Boost leak. A blown intercooler boot or charge-pipe coupler dumps boost, so the cylinders get fuel meant for full airflow but never see the air. Black smoke plus lost power and maybe a boost code. - Failing turbo (worn, sticking vanes on a VGT, or a dead actuator) that won't spool and build boost. - Restricted or fouled EGR flooding the intake with inert exhaust gas and displacing fresh air.

Fuel-side causes: - Bad injectors spraying too much or dribbling instead of atomizing. - Faulty MAF/MAP sensor telling the ECM the engine has more air than it does. - Over-fueling from a tune or a fuel system fault.

Diagnose black smoke by ruling out air first (filter, boost leak, turbo), then fuel. It's usually air.

White smoke: unburned fuel or coolant

White smoke has two very different causes, and timing tells them apart.

White smoke on cold start that clears as it warms: unburned fuel. The fuel is being injected but not fully igniting because the engine is cold and combustion is weak. That points at cold-start heat, weak or dead glow plugs, a bad glow controller, or a Cummins grid heater not working. It can also be low compression in one or more cylinders, or injection timing that's off. If it clears within a minute or two as things warm up, chase the glow/heat system.

White smoke that's constant, sweet-smelling, and comes with coolant loss: this is coolant entering the combustion chamber, and it's serious. A blown head gasket, a cracked head, or on the 6.0 Power Stroke a failed EGR cooler or oil cooler letting coolant into the intake or exhaust stream will produce steady white smoke that smells sweet. Watch for a dropping coolant level, a pressurizing coolant system, bubbles in the degas bottle, and a sweet exhaust odor. On a 6.0, white smoke plus coolant loss almost always leads back to the EGR cooler or head gaskets.

White smoke that's really steam: on a cold, damp morning a little white haze that disappears quickly is just condensation burning off. Don't panic over that.

Blue smoke: burning oil

Blue (or blue-gray) smoke means engine oil is being burned in the cylinders. Where the oil is coming from is the question:

  • Worn valve seals or guides let oil seep in, you'll often see a blue puff on startup or after decelerating downhill (engine braking pulls oil past the seals), then it clears.
  • Worn rings or cylinders let oil past on every stroke, steady blue smoke and oil consumption, usually a high-mileage or abused engine.
  • A failing turbo leaking oil past its seals into the intake or exhaust, blue smoke plus oil in the charge piping.
  • On HEUI engines (7.3/6.0), internal injector or oil-system leaks can put oil where it doesn't belong.

Blue smoke almost always comes with rising oil consumption. If you're adding oil and seeing blue, find where it's going before it gets worse.

Read the timing, not just the color

Color tells you what, timing tells you where:

  • On cold start only, then clears: white = glow/heat or minor cold combustion; blue = valve seals.
  • Under load / acceleration: black = air-fuel problem (boost leak, turbo, filter, EGR, injectors).
  • Constant at all times: white with coolant loss = head gasket/cooler; blue = rings/turbo; black = fueling or sensor fault.
  • At idle after warm-up: blue = valve guides; a whiff of black = injector or EGR.
