The injection pressure regulator, or IPR valve, controls how much high-pressure oil is available to fire the injectors on HEUI diesels like the 7.3L and 6.0L Power Stroke.
What it does
On these engines the high-pressure oil pump builds pressure, and the IPR meters how much of that pressure reaches the injectors. The computer commands the IPR to maintain the injection control pressure needed for clean starting and running.
Signs it is failing
- Hard starting, especially when hot
- Rough running until pressure stabilizes
- High-pressure oil or ICP fault codes
- Long crank before the engine catches
Replacement and what to know
A leaking or sticking IPR cannot regulate pressure correctly and is replaced as a unit. Because the high-pressure oil system shares symptoms across several parts, diagnosis should read injection control pressure and rule out the pump and O-ring leaks before condemning the IPR.
Frequently asked questions
What does the IPR valve do?
It regulates how much high-pressure oil reaches the injectors, controlling the injection control pressure the engine needs to run.
Which engines use an IPR?
HEUI oil-fired diesels, most notably the 7.3L and 6.0L Power Stroke.
Can a bad IPR cause hard starts?
Yes, especially hot, when a leaking IPR cannot hold the pressure needed to fire the injectors.
