What Is an ICP Sensor on a Diesel?

What Is an ICP Sensor on a Diesel?

The injection control pressure (ICP) sensor tells the computer how much high-pressure oil is available to fire the injectors on HEUI diesels like the 6.0L and 7.3L Power Stroke.

What it does

On HEUI engines the injectors are actuated by high-pressure oil, and the ICP sensor measures that pressure so the computer can control the IPR and fueling. A faulty ICP sensor gives the computer bad information, causing stalling, misfires, and hard starts.

Signs it is failing

  • Stalling, surging, or rough running
  • Hard starting, especially hot
  • ICP-related fault codes
  • Erratic idle

Replacement and what to know

A failed ICP sensor is replaced, and its connector should be inspected for oil contamination, which is a common cause of bad readings. Because the high-pressure oil system shares symptoms, confirm the sensor is the issue rather than an actual pressure problem.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ICP sensor do?

It measures injection control pressure so the computer can manage the high-pressure oil that fires the injectors.

Which engines use one?

HEUI oil-fired diesels, notably the 6.0L and 7.3L Power Stroke.

What causes ICP sensor failure?

The sensor element failing or oil contaminating its connector, which gives the computer erratic readings.
