What Is a Diesel Valve Cover Gasket and Why Does It Matter?

What Is a Diesel Valve Cover Gasket and Why Does It Matter?

The valve cover gasket seals the top of the cylinder head, and on some diesels it also seals the wiring that runs to the injectors, so a leak can mean more than just oil.

What it does

The gasket keeps oil sealed under the valve cover. On engines like the 7.3L Power Stroke, the valve cover also houses the injector and glow-plug wiring, so the gasket seals that harness area too. A failed gasket leaks oil and can foul connections.

Signs it is failing

  • Oil leaks down the side of the engine
  • Oil in the valve cover harness area
  • Burning oil smell near the exhaust
  • Misfires if wiring connections are fouled

Replacement and what to know

A leaking gasket is replaced, and on engines with under-cover wiring the harness is inspected at the same time. Using a quality gasket and correct torque prevents repeat leaks in a hot area.

Frequently asked questions

What does a valve cover gasket do?

It seals oil under the valve cover, and on some engines it also seals the injector and glow-plug wiring area.

Can a leak cause misfires?

On engines with under-cover wiring, oil intrusion can foul connections and cause misfires, so inspect the harness.

Why replace with quality parts?

The area runs hot, so a quality gasket and correct torque prevent repeat leaks.
