P0087 on the LML Duramax: Causes, Symptoms, and Fix

P0087 on the LML Duramax: Causes, Symptoms, and Fix

P0087 is one of the more common fuel-system trouble codes on the 2011-2016 LML Duramax. It points to low fuel rail pressure, and on a high-pressure common-rail engine that usually means the truck struggles to make power or will not stay running. Understanding what the code is telling you helps you avoid throwing parts at the problem.

What P0087 means

P0087 is defined as Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low. The ECM commands a target rail pressure and watches the rail pressure sensor. When actual pressure falls well below the commanded value for a set time, the ECM sets P0087 and often drops the truck into a reduced-power or limp mode to protect the injection system. On the LML the CP4.2 pump feeds the rail, so this code frequently shows up alongside pump wear.

Common causes

  • Restricted or clogged fuel filter, or a filter that has gone too long between changes
  • Weak or failing fuel lift/transfer supply to the CP4.2 pump
  • Air entering the low-pressure side from a loose fitting or cracked line
  • Failing CP4.2 high-pressure pump, sometimes with metal contamination
  • Leaking injector or a stuck fuel pressure regulator (FCA/MPROP) bleeding pressure off
  • Faulty fuel rail pressure sensor sending a false low reading

Symptoms

  • Illuminated check engine light with stored P0087
  • Loss of power, limp mode, or a hard cap on RPM under load
  • Extended cranking, hard starts, or a no-start
  • Stumble, surge, or stall under acceleration
  • Rough idle or hesitation when towing

How to diagnose it

Start with a scan tool that reads live data. Compare desired versus actual rail pressure while cranking and under load; a large gap that grows with demand confirms a real pressure shortfall rather than a sensor fault. Change or inspect the fuel filter first, then check low-side supply pressure to the CP4.2. Inspect for air in the clear filter housing and check all fittings. If the low side is healthy but the rail cannot build pressure, test the pressure regulator and look for injector return (spill) volume that is too high. Metal in the filter or fuel is a strong sign the CP4.2 is failing.

How to fix it

Fix the root cause the diagnosis points to. Replace a restricted fuel filter and confirm supply pressure first, since starving the CP4.2 causes both P0087 and premature pump failure. Repair air leaks on the suction side. If the pump is worn or has grenaded, the LML typically needs the high-pressure pump, rail, injectors, and lines cleaned or replaced together because metal travels downstream. Many owners take this opportunity to install a CP3 conversion to reduce future risk. Replace a faulty regulator or rail pressure sensor only after confirming with data.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with P0087?

It is not recommended. Low rail pressure and limp mode protect the engine, but continuing to drive risks a stall in traffic and, if the CP4.2 is failing, further fuel-system contamination.

Is P0087 always the CP4 pump?

No. On the LML the filter and low-side supply are the most common first causes. Confirm supply pressure and look for metal before condemning the pump.

Will a new fuel filter clear the code?

If a clogged filter caused the pressure drop, yes, after the fault clears. If pressure was low from a failing pump or leak, the code will return.
