The LB7 Duramax has one infamous weakness: its injectors. A word on the injectors themselves

The job in order (overview)
1. Clean the engine first. Common-rail work is unforgiving of dirt. Anything that falls into an open fuel passage can wreck the new injectors. Clean the top of the engine before you open anything.
2. Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect the batteries. You're working on a system that runs at extreme pressure. Follow the proper depressurization procedure and pull the batteries.
3. Remove the intake and valve covers. Clear the plumbing and intake, then pull the valve covers to expose the top of the injectors and their connections. Keep everything organized.
4. Disconnect the high-pressure lines and returns. Carefully open the fuel line connections at the injectors. Cap every opening immediately. On common rail, cleanliness at this step is the whole game.
5. Remove the hold-downs and extract the injectors. With the hold-down hardware out, work each injector free. They can be stuck from carbon, so use the correct method rather than prying against soft parts.
6. Service the bores and seals. Clean the injector bores, and replace all combustion seals and O-rings with the new kit. Never reuse the sealing hardware.
7. Install the new injectors. Seat each injector with fresh seals, install the hold-downs, and torque them to spec in the correct manner. Do not guess these values, use the factory figures. Reconnect the fuel lines and torque the line fittings properly, since a weeping high-pressure line is dangerous.
8. Reassemble. New valve cover and intake gaskets, everything back in place, batteries reconnected.
9. Prime, start, and reset balance rates. Prime the fuel system, start it, and get the air out. Then use your scan tool to read injector balance rates and program the new injectors as required so the ECM fuels them correctly. This last step is what makes the job actually finished.
Should you do this yourself?
Be honest about it. If you have common-rail experience, a spotless work area, a scan tool that handles balance rates, and the patience for the teardown, the LB7 is doable at home. If any of those are missing, this is a job where a diesel shop earns its money, because a dirt-contaminated fuel system or a mis-torqued high-pressure line is far more expensive than the labor you'd save. There's no shame in doing the diagnosis yourself and handing off the install.
