  1. Know your probe location so you're reading the right scale.
  2. Watch the trend, not just the peak. A number climbing steadily and not leveling off is the warning.
  3. Downshift before you lug. Lugging the engine at low rpm under load builds heat because the turbo isn't spinning enough to move air. A lower gear raises rpm, spools the turbo, moves more air, and drops EGT. This feels backwards to gas-engine drivers, but on a diesel, more rpm often means cooler exhaust under load.
  4. Back out when it climbs. You do not have to hold full throttle to the top of the hill. Ease off, let it recover, then feed it back in.
  5. Let it idle-cool after a hard pull. After a long grade or a hard tow, a couple minutes at idle lets the turbo center section and manifold shed heat before shutdown. This is easier on the turbo bearings and the manifold.
