The water pump is a wear item on every Duramax generation, from the LB7 through the L5P. Because a failure on the highway can mean an overheat and a bigger repair, many owners replace it preventively. Here is how to know when yours is due.
Symptoms of a failing water pump
- Coolant seeping from the weep hole or the front of the pump
- A whine or growl from the pump bearing
- Coolant loss and rising temperatures, especially when towing
- Coolant residue on the front of the block after parking
When to replace it
Many Duramax owners plan for a water pump around the 100,000-150,000 mile mark, and often replace it as a set with the thermostat and a fresh coolant fill. If you are already in the front of the engine for a belt, tensioner, or other service, doing the pump at the same time saves labor later. A weeping pump should be addressed promptly rather than watched.
What the job involves
The pump is driven by the accessory belt and sealed to the block. Replacement means draining coolant, removing the belt, unbolting the pump, cleaning the sealing surface, and installing the new pump with a fresh gasket or O-ring. Refill with the correct coolant, bleed the air, and verify there are no leaks at operating temperature. Replacing the thermostat and, on higher-mileage trucks, the belt and tensioner at the same time is cheap insurance.
Do not forget the coolant
Use the correct specification coolant and bleed the system fully; trapped air causes hot spots and false overheating readings. A proper fill and bleed is as important as the pump itself.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Duramax water pump last?
Many last 100,000-150,000 miles, though hard towing and heat shorten that. Replace promptly if it weeps or the bearing is noisy.
Should I replace the thermostat with the water pump?
Yes. The thermostat is inexpensive, the system is already drained, and a fresh thermostat protects the new pump investment.
Can I keep driving with a weeping water pump?
No. A weep can become a sudden failure and overheat. Address it before it strands you or damages the engine.
