Stuck closed: the dangerous failure

A thermostat stuck closed blocks flow to the radiator, so the engine can't shed heat. This is the one that hurts:

  • Rapid overheating, especially under load or towing.
  • Temperature climbing fast and not coming back down even at speed.
  • Coolant boiling over and pushing out of the degas or overflow.

Don't blame the thermostat for everything

  1. Feel the hoses on warm-up. Start cold. The upper radiator hose should stay relatively cool until the engine reaches operating temperature, then get hot quickly as the thermostat opens. If the upper hose gets hot almost immediately, the thermostat is stuck open. If the engine overheats while the upper hose stays cool, it's stuck closed.
  2. Watch the gauge behavior. Never reaching temperature points to stuck open; overheating that won't recover points to stuck closed.
  3. Bench test if you pulled it. Drop the thermostat in a pot of water on the stove with a thermometer and heat it. It should open near its rated temperature and close as it cools. One that's already open cold, or won't open in hot water, is bad.

Step-by-step replacement

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Opening a hot pressurized cooling system is how people get burned. Cool means cool.
  2. Drain enough coolant to get below the thermostat housing. Catch it in a clean pan if you plan to reuse it, and keep pets away from spilled coolant.
