The single most important upgrade on a 24-valve is a reliable lift pump feeding the VP44, plus monitoring fuel pressure. Owners also watch the APPS (accelerator pedal sensor) and the water-in-fuel sensor. A 24-valve with a healthy lift-pump setup and a known-good VP44 is a good truck; one with a marginal lift pump is living on borrowed time. Because of the VP44 story, clean 24-valves are often the cheapest way into a 5.9.

Common rail CP3 (2003–2007): the sweet spot

The 2003–2007 common-rail 5.9 is where the platform grew up. The Bosch CP3 high-pressure pump feeds a common rail and electronically controlled injectors, giving roughly 305 to 325 horsepower and up to 610 pound-feet, quieter operation, and genuinely modern drivability, all with no DPF and no DEF. The CP3 is robust, tolerant of marginal fuel, and rarely the thing that fails, which is a big part of why these trucks are so beloved.

The maintenance story is simple: run tight 2-micron fuel filtration to protect the injectors, and treat the injectors, water pump, thermostat, and grid heater as normal wear items. The engine isn't the whole story on these trucks. The 12-valve and 24-valve era Dodges are famous for stout NV4500 and NV5600 manual gearboxes, while the automatics behind them (the 47RH/RE and 48RE) are the weaker link, especially on tuned trucks making big power the factory automatic wasn't built for. The 2003–2007 common-rail trucks carry the 48RE automatic or the NV5600/G56 manual.
