What the UVCH is

On the 7.3, the electrical connections for the injectors and glow plugs on each cylinder head run through a harness that lives under the valve cover — hence under-valve-cover harness.   1. Run a cylinder contribution / buzz test with a scan tool to identify which cylinder is dropping out.
  2. Pull the valve cover on the suspect side and inspect the UVCH. Look for oil-soaked, corroded, green, or spread terminals, cracked connector bodies, and loose fitment on the injector and glow plug studs.
  3. Wiggle test. With the harness exposed, gently moving a connector while monitoring the miss can reveal an intermittent connection.
  4. Swap-test thinking. If a specific cylinder misfires but the injector tests fine and the UVCH terminal for that cylinder is corroded, the harness is your answer before you spend on an injector.

The key mindset: on a 7.3, a single-cylinder miss is guilty-until-proven-innocent on the UVCH. Check the cheap harness before the expensive injector.

The fix

Replace the UVCH on the affected side — and strongly consider doing both sides while the valve covers are off, since they age together and the labor overlaps. Use a quality replacement harness with good terminals. While you're in there:

  • Replace the valve cover gasket (you have to remove it anyway), and inspect the pass-through connector for oil and corrosion.
  • Clean up any oil that's been sitting on the harness and check the glow plug and injector terminals.
