The ICP sensor is one of the most common driveability gremlins on the 7.3 Power Stroke, and it's a cheap part that causes expensive-feeling symptoms. Surging, a dead pedal, hard starting, stalling — an owner sees that and starts imagining injectors and pumps. Often it's a sensor and its connector full of oil. Here's how to know.
What the ICP sensor does
The 7.3 is a HEUI engine: injectors are actuated by high-pressure engine oil, and the pressure of that oil is what determines how much fuel gets delivered. The ICP sensor — Injection Control Pressure sensor — measures that high-pressure oil and reports it to the PCM. The PCM uses that reading to command the IPR valve and control injection. If the ICP signal is wrong, the PCM's whole fuel calculation is wrong, and the engine runs badly or not at all.
That's why a failing ICP sensor produces symptoms all over the map. The computer is acting on bad information.
Why the ICP sensor fails — oil intrusion
The classic 7.3 ICP failure is oil intrusion. The sensor sits in the high-pressure oil environment, and over time oil migrates past the sensor's internal seal, up into the electrical connector and even into the pigtail wiring. Once oil is wicking into the connector, the signal gets erratic and the sensor reads inaccurately or drops out entirely.
If you unplug a suspect ICP and find oil in the connector, that's your smoking gun. And note: if oil has traveled up the pigtail, replacing just the sensor may not fully cure it — you may need to address the connector/pigtail too so fresh oil doesn't keep wicking in.
Symptoms of a bad 7.3 ICP sensor
- Surging or hunting idle — the engine won't hold steady RPM, rising and falling on its own.
- Dead pedal / no throttle response, sometimes intermittently, where the truck won't rev.
- Hard start or extended crank, and in some cases a no-start.
- Stalling, particularly at idle or coming to a stop.
- Bucking or a stumble under light load.
- Rough running that comes and goes as the oily connection makes and breaks contact.
The intermittent, comes-and-goes nature is a hallmark. A sensor drowning in oil works one minute and doesn't the next.
How to diagnose it
Read data before you buy anything. A scan tool that displays 7.3 PIDs will show ICP pressure and ICP voltage.
- Key on, engine off: ICP should read a low baseline voltage. A reading that's off baseline can indicate a bad sensor.
- Cranking: ICP has to climb to a minimum threshold for the engine to fire. If it won't build enough, the truck won't start — but that could be the sensor or the IPR/high-pressure oil system, so don't stop here.
- Running: watch ICP for erratic spikes and dropouts that track with the surging. A signal that jumps around while the engine hunts is a failing sensor.
- Unplug and inspect the connector for oil. Oil in the connector plus erratic data is a confident diagnosis.

The fix
Replace the ICP sensor with a quality unit — many owners prefer the later-style sensor design that's more resistant to oil intrusion. If the connector or pigtail is oil-soaked, replace or repair that too; a new sensor plugged into an oil-filled connector will just fail again. Use clean assembly practice and don't over-torque the sensor into its bore.
A stainless later-design sensor and a fresh connector is the combination that makes this a one-time repair rather than a recurring annoyance.

Will a bad ICP sensor cause a no-start? It can. If the sensor can't report that the high-pressure oil has reached the firing threshold, the PCM won't fire the injectors. But a no-start can also be IPR or the high-pressure oil system, so confirm with data.
Why does my new ICP sensor keep failing? Oil is wicking up the connector and pigtail into the sensor. Replace the connector/pigtail along with the sensor to stop the oil path.
