The oil cooler is the quiet killer on the 6.0L Power Stroke. It doesn't announce itself the way an EGR cooler does with white smoke. It plugs slowly, cooks the EGR cooler downstream, starves the EGR valve of cooling, and drives your oil temperatures up until something more expensive fails. What the 6.0 oil cooler is and where it sits
It's a liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger buried in the engine valley, under the intake manifold. Engine coolant flows through one side, engine oil through the other, and the cooler keeps oil temperature in check. Because it's the coolant source that feeds the EGR cooler, its condition affects the whole top end of the engine. When it works, ECT and EOT stay close together. When it plugs, everything downstream suffers.
Why they plug up
The failure isn't really about the cooler's design so much as what's in the coolant. Casting sand left in the block from the factory, plus silicate dropout from degraded coolant, settles into the tight coolant passages of the cooler. Those passages are small by design for heat transfer, so it doesn't take much debris to restrict them. Flow drops, oil temperature climbs, and the coolant that's supposed to be feeding the EGR cooler can't get through in the volume it needs.
Neglected coolant service accelerates all of it. If the gold spec coolant was never changed on schedule, the additive package breaks down and the silicate falls out of suspension right into the cooler.
Symptoms of a failing 6.0 oil cooler
- Rising oil temperature and a widening gap between EOT and ECT. This is the definitive tell.
- Overheating under load — towing, grades, hot days — as coolant flow through the top end drops.
- Repeat EGR cooler failures. New EGR cooler dies fast because it's starved of coolant.
- Coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant if the internal barrier ruptures rather than just plugs. You'll see a slick sheen in the degas bottle or emulsified oil.
- EGR system codes as the EGR valve overheats and sticks.
The ECT vs EOT test — the one that proves it
This is the single most useful diagnostic on the platform and you need a scan tool that reads 6.0-specific PIDs. Get the engine to full operating temperature and load it lightly.
- On a healthy truck, engine oil temp runs a little above coolant temp and they track within roughly 5–15°F of each other.
- As the cooler restricts, that gap grows. A wide and increasing delta — oil temp climbing well above coolant temp under load — is a plugged oil cooler until proven otherwise.

Replacing it — the job and doing it right
The oil cooler sits under the intake, so you're removing the intake and, in most workflows, the EGR cooler and turbo to get proper access. Because the EGR cooler is right there and usually already compromised, the standard move is to replace both together. Doing them separately means paying that labor twice.
When you're in there:
- Flush the entire cooling system aggressively to remove the sand and silicate that caused the problem. If you install a new cooler into dirty coolant, you're just restarting the clock.
- Use the correct spec coolant and refill carefully — the 6.0 is notorious for trapping air, so burp it fully or you'll fight a false overheat.
- Replace all disturbed gaskets and O-rings, including the oil cooler gasket and the intake and turbo gaskets.
- Consider a coolant filtration setup to keep debris out of the new cooler going forward, and stay on top of coolant service intervals.

How long does a 6.0 oil cooler last? It varies enormously with coolant maintenance. Trucks with lifetime-neglected coolant can plug early; well-maintained trucks go much longer. There's no fixed number — watch the ECT/EOT gap.
Do I have to replace the EGR cooler too? You don't have to, but the labor overlaps almost completely and the EGR cooler is usually damaged by the same restriction. Most people do both at once and don't regret it.
